IHS/Tribal Health/Urban Programs (ITU) The number of American Indian (Al) medical school graduates has remained flat over the past 5 years and is critical as Indian Country continues to suffer from physician vacancies. Many Al students lack sufficient cultural exposure to allow them to stay connected to their heritage for use as a strength during professional school and to increase their likelihood to return to Indian Country to practice. Purpose: to provide over a 10-day period a comprehensive experience and exposure to health careers in Indian Country, understanding American Indian health policy, participate in cultural and academic enhancement programs, learn about scholarship opportunities and more. Eligibility: Must be Al/AN (CDIB) or tribal enrollment card, academic level high school juniors and seniors and recent high school graduates about to enter college are eligible. Stipend: Completion of the 10-day internship, participants shall receive a stipend. What: Students will shadow health providers in I/T/U’s observing these health professionals in Indian facilities seeing Indian patients and whenever possible observing Indian Heath professionals providing healthcare. The internship will also provide a series of presentations and discussion involving Al health policy, including health disparities, self-governance, tribal sovereignty origin of the Indian Health Service, funding of Al health costs and more.
